So, I think we can all agree that summer is the time to get sunburned in the park, elbow beer-drinking assholes at concerts, sleep till noon on a weekday, start massive WIP fics that you're never going to finish, make your own margaritas with way too much tequila, and, above all, watch people on the USA network (White Collar, Suits) snark around in nice suits while being so thoroughly homoerotic that you're convinced the writers are actually winking at you.

Well. USA network just out-gayed itself.

Here are some reasons why I'm in danger of loving Common Law even more than the aforementioned two shows this summer:

you'll thank me for this )

I do, however, have a few concerns. Well, only one that's worth mentioning this early, I guess. It's just... it seems like USA has really figured out that the slashier the male lead duo, the more the fun the show is for their viewers. And they're milking this model for all it's worth. I can't help but wonder... when are they going to give us a show that actually goes there? I mean, at a certain point, throwing this much homoerotic coding in our faces without making that subtext into actual text is just an asshole move. It's like they're saying it's something that's okay to enjoy in a wink-wink-you-know-what-we-mean way, but it's not okay to actually air that story on TV. IDK. I'm annoyed.

All U.S. Internet Providers will be policing downloads by July 12, 2012
Seriously. WHAT THE FLYING FUCK WORLD.

"File-sharers, beware: By July 12, major US Internet service providers (ISPs) will voluntarily begin serving as copyright police for the entertainment industry, according to Cary Sherman, chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The so-called “six-strikes” plan is said to be one of the most effective anti-piracy efforts ever established in the US."

The article goes on to give details. After six notices, internet providers will decide to throttle a person's internet speed, or cut it off altogether. I don't know if they will crack down on torrents only, or if it is up to the internet provider. I get the sense it is up to the internet provider. So some people could get away with downloading non torrents, while others might get their internet service cut off. I urge you to click it and read, as we all know people who download.

No more downloading eps of your favorite shows for vidding, gifs, or fanfiction art. No more downloading screencaps possibly. I'm so sorry my friends. I don't even know if BT Guard will work to protect you, but I would google it if I were you. It is a professional service that supposedly can protect you from the invasive eyes of your internet provider.

Just, my friends, please make each other aware. Please be aware of the date JULY 12TH. Mark your calendar and double check with your internet provider by then. If you start receiving notices of downloaded activity, this is why. And your internet service could be throttled or cut off.

Anyone have vid recs for me? Particularly looking for Who at the moment, but not averse to Sherlock, Homeland, Game of Thrones, White Collar, or any of my other fandoms...

ETA: It seems that most of the emotions I feel frequently (lazy, bored, amused, etc.) are expressed by Jack .gifs? Some by Silas .gifs. And none of the emotions I feel frequently are expressed by .gifs of David or Michelle. Does this mean I am a villain?

ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text
  • Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history
  • Read letters from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden wherein he challenges the constitutionality of ACTA: Letter 1 | Letter 2 | Read the Administration’s Response to Wyden’s First Letter here: Response
  • Watch a short informative video on ACTA: ACTA Video
  • Watch a lulzy video on ACTA: Lulzy Video

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

Thank you so much for creating for me what will probably be one of my favorite Christmas gifts (as exciting as pans and kitchen knives are). I'm easy to please, especially in rare fandoms like those I've requested for Yuletide. I particularly like fics that dig really deeply into a character's imperfections or hang-ups and uncomfortably simmering conflict, and my favorite fics tend to be very specific and realistic -- even in my (many) fantasy/sci-fi fandoms, I tend to need that obvious real world parallel to anchor me. I dislike AUs that diffuse tension to focus on the fluffy, domestic side of a relationship (bakery AUs, high school AUs in fandoms not actually set in a high school, etc.), because the tension in relationships is generally what I gravitate to. I do, however, like AUs that make me think harder about tensions and conflicts.

1. The Outsiders: Johnny and Dally. These two are my heartbreak characters for this book, and I think that's kind of the point? So I don't want anything that erases the heartbreak. But I would like to know so much more about them. How did they meet? Why are they friends? What happened to make Johnny worship Dally? I'd love anything set before or during the novel. I'd be fine with an AU also -- maybe something set in a modern gang in the urban U.S.? I do ship them, but I'd also be exceedingly thrilled with gen.

2. My So-Called Life: Angela, Brian, Sharon, and/or Rayanne. Angela Chase so perfectly gave voice to all of my teen angst. I'd love anything post-show for this, and I'd love you more if there were romantic tension with Brian Krakow (though I'd be perfectly happy with them just arguing about something he loaned her that she never gave back). I'd love what happened next, right after the show ended, or what happened ten years later, fifteen years later. Where is Angela now? Where are Brian and Sharon and Rayanne? The only thing I really can't deal with in this fandom is earnest Angela/Jordan that really believes they'll make it in the long run. (Angela/Jordan miscommunicating as they did in the show is, however, most welcome!)

3. Homeland: Carrie, Brody, Saul. The tone and characters on this show are fantastic, so anything that preserves the tension and suspense or delves more deeply into a character would be most welcome. I particularly love Saul and Carrie, but I'm also quite taken with Brody. In terms of ships, I'm most interested in Carrie/Brody, but I'm fine with anything canon, and I'm definitely down for gen.

Thanks once again! And please note that these more detailed suggestions are just to help you find direction if you're as confused by open-ended assignments as I am!

...what would happen if the inimitable Angela Chase grew up to become a more realistic, more psychologically fucked-up version of Kara Thrace who works for the CIA and plays a delicious game of cat and mouse with an arguably more fucked-up Marine who spent years imprisoned by Al Quaeda?

You probably haven't, because not even I saw this flawless piece of awesome coming, and we all know how I feel about Claire Danes. And Kara Thrace-esque figues. And Mandy Patinkin finally getting the opportunity to play the character he might have played on Criminal Minds if Criminal Minds didn't, you know, kind of suck.

IT'S LIKE MY BIRTHDAY AND CHRISTMAS ROLLED INTO ONE. Run, don't walk, folks.
